A note from Peggy, about the pearls women wear when the day is ordinary

A Letter From the Founder

My Mother Saved Two Years for Her Strand and Wore It for Forty. These Are the Pearls I Choose the Way Dorothy Would Have, for Church, the Grocery Store, and a Tuesday Morning.

On the six things I insisted on when I chose the pearls for The Pearl Society, why they belong in real life instead of behind glass, and why the Pearl Clearance is open now while I make room for the new holiday pieces.

I am Peggy Whitaker, and I grew up at the foot of my mother’s vanity. Every morning before school I sat on the edge of her bed and watched Dorothy fasten her pearls: two tries on the clasp, a quick glance in the mirror, and a small nod. Then she was ready for the world.

Dorothy was a schoolteacher. She saved two years for that strand and wore it for forty. Not for galas. For real life. Church. The grocery store. A Tuesday with nothing on the calendar. The moment the clasp clicked, she stood a little taller.

I just knew she looked most like herself in them.

Women write to me and say the same thing, again and again. She wants to feel finished when she walks out the door, but the pearls she has been offered come in two kinds she does not trust. She thinks looking beautiful in pearls has to mean saving for years, or settling for something that looks cheap under the lights. It does not.

When Dorothy passed, her pearls came to me. That is how The Pearl Society started. Not as a luxury brand on Fifth Avenue. As a place for women who still want to feel like themselves on an ordinary morning.

I am wearing a single strand over a white tee as I write this. Soft jeans. Nothing fancy. That is the whole point.

Dorothy had one rule for her jewelry box: never keep something longer than it deserves to be there. When something better comes along, you make room. I am making room for the new holiday pieces now, and of everything on the site, these are the pearls I most wanted to write to you about.

The pearls made for women our age come in two piles. The first is locked behind glass at Fifth Avenue prices, with a salesman in a suit and a markup that pays for the velvet. The second is the costume kind: the piece you expected to look cheap, and that does.

I never accepted that a woman had to choose. Why should she have to save for two years just to feel beautiful? I argued for six things when I chose the pearls for The Pearl Society, the way Dorothy would have chosen them: classic, beautiful, made to be worn every day, and always honestly described.

1

A single strand that goes with everything.

Not a special-occasion piece that waits in a drawer for a night that never comes. The strand that goes with a plain blouse, a cardigan she has owned for years, soft jeans, a white tee. Dorothy did not wear hers for galas. She wore them for real life: church, the grocery store, my wedding, a Tuesday morning. That is still the first thing I insist on.

“thought pearls would make me look like my mother lol. wore it with jeans and got 2 compliments at the market”

Susan K., Scottsdale, AZ

2

The studs that make a plain blouse look finished.

The detail people notice without a speech. Dorothy used to say: A lady is never overdressed in pearls. Not at church. Not at the grocery store. Not on a Tuesday morning. Studs. A bracelet you forget you are wearing until someone asks. That quiet finished feeling is the part women write to me about: the compliment at church, the double-take at the market, the sense that the outfit was already there and the pearls simply completed it.

★★★★★

“My daughter ordered these black pearl earrings for me. They’re small and they don’t pinch, so I can wear them all day, and the backs are easy for my fingers. I get a compliment at church every Sunday. At 84 I didn’t think I needed anything new, but I was wrong.”

Dorothy W., Savannah, GA

3

A clasp you can do yourself.

Two tries on the clasp was Dorothy’s morning ritual. Not a struggle, a habit. I look for clasps and backs a woman can manage on her own. That is not a small thing after 60. Cold fingers. Stiff mornings. A piece you can put on alone before you leave for church or the store, without calling someone into the bedroom to help.

“Finally a clasp I can do myself with my arthritis. Thank you!!”

4

Clip-ons for unpierced ears.

Not every woman wants new piercings at our age. Look for “clip-on” in the product description. Comfortable, and no piercing needed at all. Same everyday standard as the rest of the Society. Every lady is welcome, pierced or not.

5

Honestly described.

Every product description tells you exactly what you are getting, whether that is freshwater pearls, shell pearls, or faux pearls, plus the metal and the measurements. No fine print. No surprises. I am not a luxury person. I have never shopped on Fifth Avenue. I do not read the glossy catalogs. I will not sell you theater.

★★★★★

“Honestly expected it to look cheap in person, that’s happened to me before. It doesn’t. It’s heavier than I thought and it really glows in the light. Ordering one for my sister”

Linda M., Richmond, VA

6

No Fifth Avenue markup.

We do not have a storefront on Fifth Avenue. No velvet showroom. No salesman in a suit. No fancy markup to pay for all of that. We sell online, straight to you. That is where the big price tag usually goes, and why ours does not have one. Luxury pearls, without the big price tag. The woman who wants to feel finished on a Tuesday deserves the same honesty as the woman who shops behind glass, without paying for the glass.

★★★★☆

“I almost didn’t order because the price seemed too good to be true. At my age you’ve been fooled before! But they’re lovely. My sister paid four times as much for hers at the mall, and I honestly can’t tell the difference.”

Helen R., Tucson, AZ

The Pearl Society, against the pearls you have been buying

You can find “pearls” for a little money almost anywhere. I know, because before I built this the way Dorothy would have chosen, I saw both piles. Here is the difference, laid out plainly.

Most mall and costume pearls

Look cheap under store lights

Special occasions only, or costume every day

Fiddly clasps you need help with

Vague “pearl” claims

Fifth Avenue theater, or a mall markup

The Pearl Society

Customers tell us they expected cheap, and were wrong

Made to be worn every day: church, grocery, Tuesday

Clasps and backs our customers say they can manage alone

Freshwater, shell or faux, stated on every product, with metal and measurements

Online, straight to you, without the big price tag

I refuse to sell pearls that ask a woman to choose between feeling beautiful and looking like herself. These were chosen so she never has to.

Arrived much quicker than I expected. I bought it for my dear friend’s 70th birthday and she was just delighted. This will be my go-to shop for gifts from now on!

Ready for a Tuesday. Chosen the way Dorothy would have chosen: classic, beautiful, made to be worn every day.

These are the pearls I am proudest to put in your hands while the Clearance is open. I would rather they go to women who will wear them than sit in a box waiting for a special occasion that never comes.

The reviews say the same things I have, over and over. 4.8 stars across 2,347 reviews. If you have ever wanted pearls that look like you on an ordinary morning, these are the ones I would put in your hands myself, while the pieces you love are still in stock.
